On October 19 at 12:00 PM in Posvar 3911, Mark Pennington will be drawing on his recent book, Foucault and Liberal Political Economy: Power, Knowledge and Freedom (Oxford University Press, 2025), to examine how Foucault’s critical social theory can complement Hayek’s approach to liberalism. This “post-modern liberalism” provides tools for identifying and challenging forms of un-freedom, illiberalism, and potentially oppressive forms of “over-government” in contemporary societies.
Pennington is a Professor of Political Economy and Public Policy in the Department of Political Economy at King’s College London. He is also Director of the Centre for the Study of Governance and Society. His other books include Robust Political Economy: Classical Liberalism and the Future of Public Policy and Planning and the Political Market
