The Rust Belt Initiative applies CGM’s theories of self-governance to America’s post-industrial heartland. Through comparative research and field engagement, it studies how communities across Western Pennsylvania and neighboring regions confront economic decline, polarization, and demographic change.
The project seeks to understand how local institutions, civic associations, and informal networks can revive a sense of agency and belonging. By linking scholarship with practice, the initiative aims to contribute to a broader conversation about democratic renewal in the United States and the future of community-based governance.
