What does it mean to be a conservative in the American context? How does it differ from conservatism in other times and places? And how does the American right in the age of Trump compare to conservatism as it was articulated in the post-World War II years? The radical evolution in right-of-center politics from the dual commitment to liberty and virtue toward today’s muscular, “will-to-power” approach to governing has upended many assumptions about our political landscape. This conversation will explore where the movement began, how it has changed in fundamental ways, and what the cost to our country will be if a classically liberal or “fusionist” conservatism is truly abandoned.
